Who is buying collision repair shops?

Quick Answer
The four national consolidators are the largest buyers: Caliber Collision (majority-owned by Hellman & Friedman), Gerber Collision & Glass (Boyd Group Services, which is listed on the TSX and NYSE and closed its $1.3 billion Joe Hudson's purchase in January 2026), Crash Champions (Clearlake Capital) and Classic Collision (TPG). PE-backed regional platforms such as VIVE (Greenbriar), CollisionRight (Summit Partners), Puget (Eagle Merchant), OpenRoad (Trivest) and Quality Collision Group (Susquehanna) are the most active. Published ranges put shops at roughly 3x–8x EBITDA and 2.5x–4x SDE.

16 named consolidator platforms are actively acquiring US collision repair businesses; 14 of them are private-equity-backed. Typical collision repair acquisitions price at 3x-8x EBITDA (2.5x-4x SDE for smaller owner-operated businesses), per published ranges from Focus Advisors and John M. Salony. The most recent named acquisition tracked on this page closed in September 2026.

  • •As of mid-2025, the five largest collision consolidators operated at least 4,019 U.S. locations, about 13.3% of shops, yet held roughly 31.7% of industry revenue, according to Focus Advisors.
  • •Independents still run most of the roughly 40,000 U.S. collision shops in an approximately $48 billion market, according to Matthews.
  • •More than 130 private equity firms are actively looking at collision repair, and more than $9 billion of capital has been deployed into the sector since late 2023, according to Focus Advisors.
  • •Three new private equity firms entered U.S. collision repair in 2025, and 14 PE-backed consolidators are now actively acquiring, according to Focus Advisors.
  • •Leaving out Gerber's 258-location Joe Hudson's purchase, the Big Four, established consolidators and new entrants added 81 locations in the first half of 2026, down from more than 300 in the first half of 2024, according to Focus Advisors.

Headquarters
Lewisville, TX
Scale
more than 1,850 locations nationwide; network spans 44 states after the Key Collision deal (Aug 2026)
Recent acquisitions

Caliber confidentially submitted an S-1 for an IPO on July 28, 2025. Matthews reports the offering had not priced as of August 2026. The majority/minority split and the Leonard Green and OMERS stakes come from Matthews' H1 2026 report. Hellman & Friedman's own page confirms only that the investment is current. The HQ is the Lewisville, Texas dateline on a Sept 2026 Mitchell release.

Gerber Collision & Glass (Boyd Group Services)

Strategic / public

The HQ is the Chicago, IL dateline on the press release. Matthews (Sept 2026) still names Clearlake as the backer and reports that Moody's rates Champions Financing, Inc. Caa1 after an August 2025 downgrade. No 2025–2026 sale or recap was found.

Classic Collision

Private equity
Owner
TPG Capital (acquired from New Mountain Capital, 2024)

Brad Anderson became CEO effective June 2, 2026, succeeding Toan Nguyen, who moved to the board. The location count and current TPG ownership are from Matthews (Sept 2026). Focus Advisors says Classic is right-sizing, and its H1 2026 additions (Waco, TX and Hampton, VA) were new openings, not acquisitions.

CollisionRight

Private equity

Summit Partners (majority since Jan 2024); founder Rich Harrison retains equity
Headquarters

Summit still lists CollisionRight in its portfolio. Focus Advisors reports that board member John Robinson was named CEO in June 2026 and Rich Harrison became Chief Development Officer.

VIVE Collision

Headquarters

Garnett Station's own portfolio page lists VIVE as Exited, so Greenbriar, alongside management, is the current sponsor. The HQ city comes from Garnett Station's portfolio page and Tracxn, not from VIVE itself.

Private equity
Owner
SouthWorth Capital Management (Memphis family office)
Headquarters
Memphis, TN
Scale

The backer is a family office: SouthWorth describes itself as a Memphis-based family office. Focus Advisors says Brightpoint was one of the most active acquirers in 2025 but slowed sharply in H1 2026, adding only one shop.

G&C Auto Body

Strategic / family-owned

Headquarters
Santa Rosa, CA
Scale
64 locations throughout California and Nevada
Recent acquisitions
Miracle Auto Body (Chico, CA, Jul 2025); SJ Denham Collision Repair Center (Redding, CA, Jul 2025) (source)

The HQ is the corporate office listed on G&C's locations page. Focus Advisors calls G&C the largest fully independent MSO, at 63 locations after adding seven in H1 2026, and says it announced its first move outside Northern California, into Nevada, in June 2026.

OpenRoad Collision

Private equity
Owner
Trivest Partners and LP First Capital
Headquarters
Austin, TX
Scale
41 locations in 5 states
Recent acquisitions
Wilson Collision Center (Gastonia, NC, Sep 2026); Davis Paint & Collision (3 locations, Oklahoma City, OK, Jun 2026); Frank's Collision Repair (9 locations, Greater Houston, TX, Nov 2025) (source)

LP First Capital's portfolio page lists the investment as Current. The HQ city comes only from a PitchBook profile, and the location count is from OpenRoad's homepage. Steve Horton is CEO.

Chilton Auto Body

Private equity
Owner
Trive Capital
Headquarters
San Carlos, CA
Scale
25 locations across California
Recent acquisitions
Marina Auto Body (Marina Del Rey, Inglewood and Huntington Beach, CA, Mar 2026) (source)

The location count is from Focus Advisors (Mar 2026). Focus Advisors says Marina was Chilton's first acquisition since Trive bought it, and that CEO Paul Gange has led the company since September 2025.

Kaizen Collision Center

Private equity
Owner
Kinderhook Industries (with LNC Partners and founder Jacob Tilzer)
Headquarters
Scottsdale, AZ
Scale
45 stores spanning CO, AZ, CA, IA, NV and NE

Focus Advisors reports that Kaizen added no shops in H1 2026, so treat it as a paused buyer. The store count is from Focus Advisors; Kinderhook's page still says 48. No named 2024–2026 add-ons were found.

Driving Force Collision

Private equity
Owner
TRP Capital Partners
Headquarters
Long Island City, NY
Scale
seven shops
Recent acquisitions
Tom Masano Collision Center (Reading, PA, May 2025); Precision Auto Works of LIC (3 locations, New York City and Long Island, NY, closed Nov 2024) (source)

This is a small new-entrant platform. The HQ is from TRP's 2024 year-end post, and the shop count is from Focus Advisors' 2026 mid-year review, which also reports an April 2026 Allentown Collision Center deal whose location is not stated.

Collision Leaders

Private equity
Owner
Bestige Holdings
Headquarters
Warrensburg, MO
Scale
13 stores

Bestige is a private investment holding company, not a traditional fund. Focus Advisors reports two H1 2026 acquisitions in Kansas and Missouri but does not name them. The HQ is the main address on its BBB profile, and the business was previously Warrensburg Collision.

Minuteman Collision

Private equity
Owner
Willow River (Willow River Collision HoldCo LP)
Headquarters
Not disclosed
Scale
four locations across greater Boston

Medium confidence. Willow River calls itself an investment partnership, so treat it as independent-sponsor backing, not a traditional PE fund. Its Willow River Collision HoldCo LP filed a Form D with the SEC. CEO Jason Hope was Gerber's head of M&A. Focus Advisors says Minuteman debuted in H1 2026 by buying four Boston-area shops, but no source names them.

Frequently asked

Who is buying collision repair shops right now?

There are four national consolidators: Caliber Collision (majority-owned by Hellman & Friedman), Gerber Collision & Glass (Boyd Group Services, listed on the TSX and NYSE), Crash Champions (Clearlake Capital) and Classic Collision (TPG). Focus Advisors says that in the first half of 2026 the smaller, largely PE-backed platforms grew five to seven times faster than those four. It names CollisionRight, Quality Collision Group, VIVE Collision, Puget Collision, BrightPoint, OpenRoad and Chilton, along with the family-owned G&C Auto Body.

What multiple will a single-location body shop sell for?

Focus Advisors puts a single shop at about 3x to 3.5x EBITDA. Auxo Capital Advisors puts single-location collision shops in a broad 3.0x–5.5x range, measured on SDE or EBITDA. Broker John Salony quotes 2.5x to 4.0x SDE, with direct repair program (DRP) relationships and OEM certifications earning premium multiples.

Do multi-shop operators get a higher multiple?

Yes. Focus Advisors says a medium MSO would realize a multiple closer to 5x to 5.5x EBITDA, against about 3x to 3.5x for a single shop. Auxo says larger repair centers and multi-location collision groups may support about 4.0x–8.0x EBITDA. In Focus Advisors' worked example, a PE firm pays around eight times EBITDA for a platform.

Will a buyer look at me if I only own one shop?

Yes. Focus Advisors reports that several private equity firms moved downstream in 2025 to pursue operators with as few as one to three locations, and that single-shop acquisitions by smaller MSOs continue in many markets. Recent single-location deals include Superior Collision in Marquette, MI, bought by CollisionRight, and Key Collision's Southaven, MS shop, bought by Crash Champions.

Why are sale prices lower if multiples have held?

Focus Advisors says EBITDA multiples for premium assets have held, and that total valuations fell mainly because trailing-twelve-month EBITDA declined. At a 7.0x multiple, it says, a 10% revenue decline can translate into a 20% or greater drop in enterprise value.

How long does it take to sell a collision repair business?

Broker John Salony says most body shop sales take 6–10 months from listing to closing. He adds that shops with clean financials, strong DRP relationships and modern equipment sell faster.

Methodology & sources

Compiled in October 2026 from several kinds of source: sponsor portfolio pages, company and deal press releases, and Boyd Group's SEC filing. It also draws on Focus Advisors' published collision M&A reviews and Matthews' H1 2026 net-lease report. Each platform's owner was rechecked for a 2025–2026 sale, recap or merger. Each deal's location is given only as its source states it, and is left blank where no source states one. The multiples come from advisor and broker publications. They are published ranges, not closed-deal data.
